Game one was a little hairy, but the Jr. C Alliston Hornets are now up two games to none over the Erin Shamrocks in a best-of-seven semi-final series in the Georgian Mid-Ontario loop of the Ontario Hockey league.
The Hornets can thank Kyle McDowell for pulling out the win in game one Friday night on home ice at the New Tec Rec Centre. The Shamrocks brought their ‘A’ game in the first and second period and jumped out to an early 3-1lead after two periods of play. McDowell, however, scored two goals in the third to tie up and then capped a hat trick with the game winner in overtime.
Zenon Byblow scored the only other Alliston goal in the game on a powerplay from Ryan Algar and Luke Vanderhulst.
Saturday night the Alliston boys boarded the bus for Shamrock country and proved they had blown off the dust and greased their gears back up after sitting out the first round with a first-place bye by hammering Erin 9-2.
Hornets’ scoring in this one came from across the bench with goals from Mitch Ronan, Kyle McPherson, Cole Parker , Zenon Byblow , Cole Parker, Robbie Rutledge , Kyle McDowell, Cody Rhodes and Kris Velss.
The two teams will meet up for game three at the New Tec Recreation centre tonight Monday with an 8:30 p.m. puck drop. Game four will be played Wednesday night back in Erin.
