It was another historic season for the Jr. C Alliston Hornets as the boys in green and gold won their second-straight league cup and then took their run all the way to the finals for the Schmalz Cup. __Title__a New Tec Firefighters host provincial convention
If anyone in Beeton needed assistance putting out a fire over the past week they would have had plenty of help. The Firefighters' Association of Ontario (FFAO) held its 107th annual firefighters convention at the New Tecumseth Joint Operations centre on County Road 1 just west of town. Hosted by firefighters of Alliston, Beeton, and Tottenham, the convention drew participants from 70 fire departments around Ontario. Close to 3,000 people took part in the event including many who stayed at a temporary campground behind the New Tecumseth Joint Operations Centre. Around 400 campsites were occupied over the long weekend. The convention began July 25, with training courses through the week and culminated with the weekend events which included fun and games and a chance for firefighters from different areas to get to know each other and renew past friendships. The chance to honour fallen members is also a large part of the weekend. Firefighters from all departments marched through town in full dress uniform to the Beeton cenotaph where a ceremony was held to honour fallen comrades. A second parade, with lots of noise and sirens, was held in Alliston on Monday morning. The parade featured vintage firefighting apparatus including a horse-drawn carriage. Testing basic skills with a little fun thrown in presented a challenge at the firefighters games. Held in the parking lot of the operations centre, the games featured several events including those involving strength and fire-hose skills. The games also provided a free shower for many in the crowd when the hoses were turned on. A games day for kids was held on Sunday giving future firefighters the opportunity to wear the gear and test their dexterity with a fire hose. The convention is held in each location for two consecutive years so many of the conventioneers will return in 2009 for the next event. [more]

__Title__a CFB Borden Armed Forces Day and Air Show 2008
The CFB Borden Armed Forces Day and Air Show June 21 and 22 brought planes and pilots from across North America and thousands of visitors from across Ontario, to check out the displays on the ground, and the sights in the skies. The Canadian Forces Sky Hawks parachute team took to the air with a patriotic display that paid homage not only to Canada, but also to our American neighbours and the Vintage Wings of Canada gave spectators a glimpse into Canada's aviation history with flights from a Second World War Spitfire, and this North American Harvard. The Canadian Forces CF-18 demonstration team was also in the sky, giving visitors a look at some of the capabilities of Canada's primary combat aircraft. Along with the military planes, there were several civilian aerobatic performances to keep the crowds on the edge of their seats. The event attracted 25,000 people, and raised over 6,000 pounds of food and $1,800 in cash for local food banks. [more]

__Title__a Fox Jaw and Bass Lions at Groundswell
Call 'em beatniks, call 'em modern day hippies, call 'em whatever you want, the Bass Lions said they ain't scared to make big beats and acoustic guitars into bed-fellows and they ain't scared to sing, sing, sing in harmony, in brassy choirs, or all alone in rock 'n' roll, baritone and cracked falsetto. That proved true as they rocked Groundswell Coffeehouse last weekend with Fox Jaw and entertained a packed house. [more]

__Title__a Sunnidale Winterama 2008
It always snows for Sunnidale Winterama, but this year, organizers must have been getting a little worried as Mother Nature took it down to the wire last week. Hundreds of revellers turned out for the event which featured games, contests, and a lot of cold, hard fun. [more]

__Title__a Alliston Rotary Night Lit Parade
The Alliston Rotary Club's first-ever Night Lit Santa Claus parade was a hit with close to 40 brightly lit floats making their way down Victoria Street all the way out to the west end of town. The parade took about an hour to pass any given spot alongside the curb, which was just long enough given the -10 C temperatures combined with a windchill that made it feel more like -15 C. Despite the cold, thousands lined the route and took in everything from lit up gingerbread houses to live camels and reindeer. Freelance photographer Stephen Hayward took a ton of great photos.
