__Title__a New Tec Firefighters host provincial convention
If anyone in Beeton needed assistance putting out a fire over the past week they would have had plenty of help. The Firefighters' Association of Ontario (FFAO) held its 107th annual firefighters convention at the New Tecumseth Joint Operations centre on County Road 1 just west of town. Hosted by firefighters of Alliston, Beeton, and Tottenham, the convention drew participants from 70 fire departments around Ontario. Close to 3,000 people took part in the event including many who stayed at a temporary campground behind the New Tecumseth Joint Operations Centre. Around 400 campsites were occupied over the long weekend. The convention began July 25, with training courses through the week and culminated with the weekend events which included fun and games and a chance for firefighters from different areas to get to know each other and renew past friendships. The chance to honour fallen members is also a large part of the weekend. Firefighters from all departments marched through town in full dress uniform to the Beeton cenotaph where a ceremony was held to honour fallen comrades. A second parade, with lots of noise and sirens, was held in Alliston on Monday morning. The parade featured vintage firefighting apparatus including a horse-drawn carriage. Testing basic skills with a little fun thrown in presented a challenge at the firefighters games. Held in the parking lot of the operations centre, the games featured several events including those involving strength and fire-hose skills. The games also provided a free shower for many in the crowd when the hoses were turned on. A games day for kids was held on Sunday giving future firefighters the opportunity to wear the gear and test their dexterity with a fire hose. The convention is held in each location for two consecutive years so many of the conventioneers will return in 2009 for the next event. [more]
