Support building for Banting farm funds

BY Maija Hoggett   January 30, 2008 10:01

Phones at the New Tecumseth municipal office have been ringing steadily in support of the town’s bid to buy the Banting homestead.

Mayor Mike MacEachern said he couldn’t put a dollar amount on the phone calls they’ve received, but said it is looking positive. Aside from financial offers, he said people with a communications background, and construction groups have also volunteered their services.

“There’s been a real range for offers of support,” said MacEachern.

The homestead has received national media attention with a segment on Canada AM and interest from CBC Newsworld last week after New Tecumseth council passed a bylaw allowing the town to purchase the property from the Ontario Historical Society Foundation for $600,000. A condition of the deal is that the town must raise an additional $500,000 through financial or in-kind donations for repairs to the aging buildings on the Banting homestead.

The money must be raised before June 30, when the town takes ownership of the property from the OHSF.

In the coming weeks a fundraising committee will be established and a more concrete plan put into motion. Until then, people interested in donating to the Banting homestead can call the Town of New Tecumseth at 705-435-3900 or visit www.town.newtecumseth.on.ca.
