Edward Banting wanted homestead to honour uncle

During my lifetime I had the great opportunity to meet and work with Edward Banting. Edward was the nephew of Sir Frederick Banting and dedicated a great part of his life to preserving the memory of his famous uncle. He was a very proud and devoted nephew.

While serving on the board of directors of the Alliston and District Chamber of Commerce I was fortunate to be asked to promote the area on various occasions.

Presenting Alliston to the general public was very easy for me because I was very proud of the town and the surrounding area — the manufacturing, the agriculture, and the heritage.

Of course Sir Fredrick Banting was the areas most famous son, so it was most natural for me to include displays of all his memorabilia.

Edward was so very helpful. He was always willing to loan me anything that I needed and accompanied me at times when I felt I needed assistance. He was very well informed as to the activities that transpired in the lab where Sir Frederick and Dr. Best worked. He was also well informed on his artistic talent while painting alongside and in the style of the famous Group Of Seven. He welcomed the general public into the home where the parlour included the artist’s smock, an easel and pallet along with a bust of his famous uncle.

A small oil painting had a prominent spot on the wall. I was very pleased to learn that Honda had reproduced that painting for its first Canadian Christmas card.

Edward was responsible for the huge monument that appears at the front entrance to the property. He explained to me that it represented the globe and the lines are to show that the discovery of insulin had helped diabetics all over the world. He shared with me his wish to bequeath the estate to the historical society with the understanding that they would continue to honour the memory of his famous uncle by opening this vintage home with all its memorabilia for all the world to see.

This is a very sad situation. I appeal to everyone who reads my letter to come forward and offer your support in any way possible.

It is imperative that we unite to preserve this wonderful place for future generations so they will learn and understand the importance of this discovery.
