Banting students throw their support behind homestead

Banting Banter

BY Danielle Ambs   May 23, 2007 15:05

Banting students were out in full force last week, supporting the preservation of the ever-controversial Banting Homestead. Every year Banting's "Challenge and Change in Society" class conducts a project which makes a change in society. This year's project is to preserve the historical Banting Homestead.

With the support of Bob Banting, the Challenge and Change class's main goal is to have the homestead transformed into a diabetes camp. The group realizes that this is a very large goal, and they have therefore decided to undertake several smaller goals on the path to their main focus. First, with donations from Alliston Signs, the class will replace the road signs which were previously stolen. The new signs will read "Birthplace of Sir Frederick Banting: Discoverer of Insulin".

Secondly, with generous donations from Alliston Home Hardware, the class will replace the fence which currently surrounds the homestead. They will also clean up the area around the cabin and install patio stones.

Last week the Challenge and Change class circulated a petition in support of the preservation of the Homestead, and the response was great. Banting students were eager to support this important cause, proving that "Sir Fredrick Banting's accomplishments are an inspiration to us, and we won't let our heritage be forgotten".

Another event which should raise pride within Banting students is the annual McLaren Art Centre exhibition. The event provides an opportunity for graduating Simcoe County students to showcase their work in a juried show. Entry is competitive, and this year seven Banting students' pieces have been accepted into the showcase. Melissa Bonga, Jennifer Bryson, Melanie Lindayen, Jennifer Shelson, Tyler Hall, Kaley Doleman, and Colin Walker should all be very proud of this accomplishment.

Don't forget about Fine Arts Night: being held tomorrow (May 24) at 6 p.m. at Banting. The evening will feature Banting students showcasing their talents in dance, drama, art, music and more! Admission is only $3, so come out and support art at Banting.
