Give Banting the legacy he deserves

March 16, 2007 14:03

I am writing to you today to voice my wish that the 100-acre Banting homestead be preserved for future generations.

My daughter, now nine, was diagnosed with type 1 diabetes in May of 2003. To be sure, a diagnosis of diabetes is a terrible shock and life-long burden, especially for a young child, but nonetheless, we are extremely grateful for Sir Frederick Banting's gift of insulin, which allows her to be a normal happy young girl.

One day, I would very much like to travel again to Ontario and take my family to the Banting homestead so that we may visit and pay respect to the birthplace of this incredible gentleman whose intelligence and perseverance led to the discovery that saved my daughter's life. I do not wish it to become yet another suburban neighbourhood. It would be lost forever. This would be completely devastating to so many families.

It would be an absolute shame on the entire province to see Dr. Banting's homestead developed for commercial housing. If it wasn't for Banting and his courage and creativity, I would not be able to cherish each moment with my daughter. I owe this gentleman a great deal, the least of which is to support the preservation of his historical birthplace and the idea of a camp for children with diabetes.

This is the proper legacy.
