New Tec extends Banting Homestead deal for OHS

BY Janis Ramsay   November 16, 2006 17:11

New Tecumseth will hear a response from the Ontario Historical Society about the sale of the Banting Homestead land.

In October, the town offered to buy the 100-acre property from the OHS for $1 million. In turn, it would sell 30 acres to a local developer for $1 million, and keep the rest in hope of turning it into a camp for diabetic youth.

The OHS had until Nov. 6 to respond to the deal, but that deadline was extended.

New Tecumseth Mayor Mike MacEachern said the OHS is meeting Friday (Nov. 10) to talk about the offer.

"They are getting together to authorize a response. We expect to receive that at the beginning of next week," he said.

With the election Mon., Nov. 13, MacEachern said the town will have to decide if the old council or the newly-elected council would proceed with the deal. "Obviously, we want to (settle) this as quickly as possible."

The inaugural meeting of council is Mon., Dec. 4.
