Flyers beaten 6-0 in playoff opener

BY Mike Dodd   February 08, 2010 17:02

MIDLAND – A lack of discipline cost the Midland Flyers dearly in their playoff opener Sunday against the Stayner Siskins.
The hometown Siskins fired home five power-play goals en route to a 6-0 win in the opening game of the Georgian Bay Mid-Ontario Junior C Hockey League series.
“It wasn’t pretty,” said Flyers general manager John Bantten.
With the win, Stayner grabbed a 1-0 lead in the best-of-seven series, with Game 2 scheduled for Tuesday at 9 p.m. at the North Simcoe Sports and Recreation Centre in Midland. Game 3 will be played Thursday at 8:30 p.m. in Stayner.
According to Bantten, Stayner goaltender Chris Daniels was the difference early in Sunday’s game, stopping Matt Quilty on two breakaway attempts.
Bantten, who watched Midland win four of eight games against Stayner during the regular season, said a lot of the younger Flyers were battling nerves on Sunday.
“We have a lot of new players on the team this year who came right from minor hockey,” he explained. “This is their first experience with junior playoffs, so I think they were pretty nervous going into the game. And they might have had trouble dealing with their emotions, and that showed in the penalties we took.”
Midland trailed 3-0 after the first period. Bantten said the Flyers were limited to about eight solid scoring chances all game.
“We controlled the play for the first few minutes of the second period, (but) we couldn’t beat them on those two breakaways by Quilty and they ended up getting another power-play goal shortly after,” said Bantten.
The Penetang Kings, meanwhile, opened their playoff series on the road against the Schomberg Cougars on Monday evening. Results were unavailable before The Mirror’s press time.
Game 2 in that series will be played Thursday at 8:30 p.m. in Schomberg, with Game 3 scheduled for Friday at 8 p.m. in Penetanguishene.
