Passion for history pays off

An Innisfil resident’s ongoing passion for local history was formally recognized last Thursday evening.

Donna Wice, a past president of the Innisfil Historical Society, was presented with a Certificate of Achievement and pin from the Ontario Heritage Trust organization for her tireless efforts to preserve, and promote the importance of Innisfil’s past.

The presentation took place at the beginning of the monthly meeting of the Innisfil Heritage Committee at Town hall.

Committee chairperson Andrew Cowan told the audience that “Donna has helped pull us together and get people interested in local history through projects such as Farms of Innisfil, the restoration of the Knock Schoolhouse and the 50th anniversary of Sunnybrae Public School.”

For her part, Wice isn’t resting on her most recent laurels.
“We’re near production on a book on Cookstown,” she says. “You need to be over 80 years old to be in it. It’s exciting to hear about local history from these people.”

Wice was thrilled to receive a congratulatory letter as part of the package signed by former Lt.-Gov. Lincoln Alexander.

“It was pretty exciting and felt pretty special,” Wice says. “It’s also very satisfying to know the Knock Heritage site has such a clean, friendly atmosphere. The history books of the Innisfil Historical Society have been very valued and our landscape is continually changing.’
