East Oro Public School teacher Dave Jamieson was the special guest at an assembly staged Jan. 29, prior to his departure for the 2010 Winter Olympics in Vancouver. The goaltending coach for Canada’s Olympic women’s ice hockey team, Jamieson was given a banner signed by all the staff and students at the school.

School bids Jamieson good luck

ORO-MEDONTE - With two Olympic gold medal rings on his fingers, Dave Jamieson is something of a big wheel in Canadian hockey circles.
But he’s even a bigger dude at East Oro Public School.
Staff and students at the school, many wearing red in support of Canada’s Olympic team, hosted a 45-minute assembly for Jamieson on Jan. 29, prior to the Orillia resident heading to the 2010 Winter Olympics in Vancouver.
“It doesn’t matter whether it is students or Olympic athletes, it’s all about helping them achieve their goals in life and that’s what I love most about being a teacher,” said Jamieson.
A goaltending consultant with Hockey Canada and an Orillia resident, Jamieson jetted to Alberta on Sunday to meet up with the members of the Olympic women’s hockey team.
Among the items he took with him was a special banner, designed by students. He also received a photo showing the students forming the five circles symbolic of the Olympic rings.
“I’ll make sure the banner is hung in our dressing room,” Jamieson told the students.
The Jan. 29 assembly was blanketed in the Olympic spirit, with W.R. Best Public School principal Ann Arksey sprinting into the gym in her Olympic Torch Relay tracksuit, carrying the torch that transported the Olympic flame.
She related to the students how she applied to carry the torch, never giving up hope she could be a part of the event. “You should never let an opportunity pass you by,” Arksey said.
Jamieson has worked with Canada’s Olympic women’s ice hockey squad since 2001. His immediate task is making sure netminders Kim St. Pierre, Charline Labonte and Shannon Szabados are at the top of their game. On Feb. 13, Canada faces Slovakia in the club’s opening preliminary-round game.
