BARRIE - The Kempenfelt Community Players bring Andrew Lloyd Weber’s hit Evita to the stage for their latest production.
“It’s a great timeless story with some amazing music,” said producer Andrée Day. “We have a great cast and it’s a Andrew Lloyd Weber show, so you know it’s going to be fantastic.”
Evita is the story of Eva Peron, wife of former Argentine dictator, Juan Peron. The play follows Evita’s early life, acting career, rise to power, charity works, feminist involvement and eventual death.
Evita features lyrics by Tim Rice. The musical, which won seven Tony Awards, features hit songs High Flying Adored, O What a Circus and Don’t Cry For Me Argentina.
Day said the cast has been rehearsing since before Christmas.
“We have a very dedicated and talented cast that will bring this amazing story to the stage,” she said. “We have more than 50 people in the chorus. We have a children’s choir taking part. Our youngest cast member is nine, and the oldest is over 60. It’s a lot of talented people in one production.”
The production is directed by Carl Wachowiak and Maria Christina Varano-Gallo. Edwina Douglas is the music director and Joy Bainborough is choreographer.
Evita runs Feb. 11 through 14 at the Georgian College Theatre. Tickets are $20.
