Health care must improve locally

February 02, 2010 15:02

Editor:

In response to last week's letter (Mayor and council need to do more for health care, p. 4, Wasaga Sun), I too would like to make a few comments.

I moved to Wasaga Beach eight years ago and fell in love. I believed I had finally found a home. I've always wanted to walk on the beach but medical problems with my legs and lungs have made that next to impossible. Seven years ago I found a doctor and I finally had hope that with her help and the specialists she sent me to, I would finally be able to go for those walks. Now she is retiring and I have nowhere else to turn in order to continue my health care. All waiting lists require that patients be absolutely without a doctor before they are even allowed on the list. I cannot afford any disruption in my care or medications or I will die. I'm even wondering now if my recent surgery was even worth the effort if I cannot have consistent health care.

Going to Collingwood for the ER or walk-in clinic is out of the question, as I don't have a car.

The Red Cross does as good a job as they can with their limited number of volunteer drivers to get me to medical appointments but I need to book their services two weeks in advance.

More needs to be done for local health care needs or many of us, including myself, will either move away or die.

Martin Stockley,

Wasaga Beach.
