Seniors needed for youth mentoring program

BY Staff   January 28, 2010 17:01

ALLISTON - With wisdom in experience, seniors have a lot to teach a younger crowd.

And seniors could also benefit from a new volunteer program with enhanced computer skills.

CONTACT is launching a new online-only intergenerational mentoring program that will see seniors sharing their skills, wisdom and experience with local youth.

The program, called Ask US - Understanding Seniors Helping Youth to Succeed, is free and anonymous and allows seniors to communicate with youth from their homes.

Isabelle Lewis, volunteer centre coordinator for Volunteer South Simcoe, said many youth face issues that are difficult to deal with and have nowhere to turn to for advice and support.

She said the program allows young people to virtually connect with seniors who can provide that support and advice.

Ask US is now looking for seniors in Simcoe County who are interested in volunteering.

Computer skills are not required, just a desire to help youth to succeed, Lewis said. Senior volunteers will be supported with mentoring training, monthly meetings, computer skills upgrading (if needed), and access to the technology necessary to engage in the program.

Seniors can volunteer as often as they like, however, a one-hour time commitment per week is required.

To volunteer or for more information about the program, seniors can contact Lewis at 705-435-4900 or isabelle@contactsouthsimcoe.ca.
