Singer Holly Cole will headline Community Living Huronia’s 50th-anniversary celebration on Feb. 6 at Midland’s Best Western Highland Inn.

CLH rolling out red carpet to mark 50 years

MIDLAND – It’s going to be all glitz and glamour next month for Community Living Huronia’s 50th-anniversary celebration.
The organization, which supports individuals with developmental disabilities in the community, will host "A Red Carpet Evening" Feb. 6 that will include dinner, champagne, a silent auction and platinum-selling Canadian jazz chanteuse Holly Cole.
“We originally had it in the fall, but, with a lot of other organizations hopping on board and having galas, we decided to shake it up a bit and hold in the winter,” said Anna Hartman, development office for the CLH Foundation.
The purpose of the event is to raise money and give the organization’s longtime supporters a great night of entertainment, she added.
“We really wanted to give them a fun night, and that’s why we went big with Holly Cole this year, thinking she’d be someone that everyone could enjoy. It’s kind of exciting for Midland to have her coming to town.”
Tickets for the event – which will take place at the Best Western Highland Inn – are $125, which includes both dinner and concert.
Hartman said event-goers will experience everything one would expect when walking the red carpet, including the paparazzi.
“And you get a nice glass of champagne on the red carpet before you enter,” she said.
Hartman added people should expect “a great night with great people.”
“Everyone is there celebrating our 50 years of service to the community, so it’s definitely a celebration,” she said. “We want to make it a great evening for everyone.”
Television anchorman Lance Chilton will be master of ceremonies for the evening. The silent auction, meanwhile, will feature prizes including a fully stocked wine cooler, Toronto Maple Leafs tickets and a custom electric bicycle.
Last year’s event raised approximately $20,000, a goal Hartman noted they are hoping to achieve again in 2010. Money raised goes toward supporting initiatives such as the Teen Camp and preschool readiness program, as well as addressing accessibility issues for the people the organization supports.
The evening will also include a glimpse into CLH’s past, thanks to a slide show Hartman has been toiling away at creating.
“Being a new member of Community Living Huronia, it’s amazing to see the opportunities the people we support had 50 years ago compared to now,” she said. “(Today) they’re working, living on their own – so it’s a big celebration of that and how far they’ve come and … how far they can go from here.”
