Civic remains top-selling passenger car

BY Maija Hoggett, Staff   January 13, 2010 17:01

ALLISTON - In 2009, the Alliston-made Honda Civic maintained its title as Canada's top-selling passenger car.

To clinch the top spot for the 12th year in a row, last year 62,654 Honda Civics were sold.

"We thank the tens of thousands of Canadians who bought the Honda Civic models in 2009 to make it Canada's top-selling car for the 12th year in a row," said Jerry Chenkin, executive vice president of Honda Canada Inc. "We thank these new car buyers for their vote of confidence in the Civic with its strong resale value, excellent fuel efficiency, class-leading standard safety features and fun-to-drive character."

In Alliston, more than 5.3 million Honda and Acura vehicles have been made at the Honda of Canada Manufacturing plant in the past 23 years. Of that, more than three million of those vehicles have been Honda Civics.

Being named the top-selling passenger car comes after sales of Honda vehicles in December were up slightly.

In December, Honda sold 10,830 units, up 21 per cent from December 2008.

"We are very pleased to see consumer confidence improving slowly but surely," said Chenkin, "and this is reflected in the overall market results. We expect that this optimism will continue into the first quarter of 2010."

Overall, Honda Canada sales in 2009 were down.

The company sold 140,006 units in its Honda and Acura division, an 18 per cent decline over 2008.

Due to the declining sales, production at the Honda plants in Alliston has been cut back.

Associates at Alliston's Plant 1 were told before the annual Christmas shutdown that Plant 1 Saturday overtime shifts in January are cancelled. Afternoon shifts on Fridays are also being reduced by four hours.
