Tottenham hardballer's show grit in tourney

Tottenham Minor Hardball

BY Submitted   July 03, 2009 13:07

It was a wacky weekend of hardball for the Tottenham Tyke's recently at a tournament held in New Lowell. Brutal rains on Saturday to sunshine on Sunday made for an interesting time for the team's inaugural tournament. However this did not stop the boys from putting on a whale of show for all those attended.

The weekend started off with a tilt against Innisfil on Saturday morning. The kids needed flippers not spikes as they pretty much played in muck.

Tottenham held the lead after the first with Dawson Foerster starting on the mound. Down a couple of runs later, Trenton Bailey got the boys' first run on what turned out to be the winning inning. Jack Birkett came in to clean up and get the save to Forester's win. Matthew Wadge, Jacob Brayford and Mitchell Blanchard each scored a pair of runs. Nathan Smilsky also pitched well in middle relief.

With the next game rained out, the boys returned to New Lowell on Sunday to continue their winning ways. Next up was the team from Ivy. This was a real barn burner. Tottenham came out of the gate on fire with four singles in the first, led by Jack Moore's two RBI single opposite field to end the inning. Tyson Foerster started well on the mound and kept Ivy at Bay. Brock Logie scored the only run of the second with some good base running.

Both teams battled hard and at the end of regulation the score was tied. The tie breaker was tied, so it was off to extra innings. Ivy came out and got three runs in their half of the inning. That seemed to spark the Tottenham boys as they came back with four of their own. Mark Blowes began the inning with a walk, followed by a Wadge belt that cleared the bases. With two men on base, Austin Livingston, got the winning hit driving in two runs for the win. Griffin Murray was the winning pitcher

After that it was on to the semis against a tough squad from Wasaga Beach. This one was even crazier than the previous game. Back and forth it went with both teams exchanging runs.

Wasaga had a chance to win in the bottom of the fourth, with runners at second and third and no outs, but Dawson Foerster and the defence shut the door.

The first tie breaker was tied, but Tottenham won the second tie breaker sending them to the finals.

Smilsky was a machine on the mound going the distance to his pitch count.

The final game was on the big diamond, with the sun cascading around the large crowd assembled. Everyone sensed this was going to be a great game.

Tottenham surged out of the gates with five runs in the top of the first. This was a result of singles by Wadge, Dawson Foerster, Jacob Brayford and Tyson Foerster.

Moore hit a huge double and Murray had a sweet triple to lift the boys to a 5-0 lead.

The Tottenham infield was stellar this game, with Brayford making some great plays at first. Birkett, Smilsky and Dawson Foerster controlling the bags beautifully and Griff Dog working his magic behind the plate.

Solid plays by Blowes and Bailey Matson in the field helped keep Tottenham on top at the end of one

The Foerster brothers along with Murray and Wadge each saw mound duty in this game. Unfortunately, Tottenham ran into a dynamite little pitcher from Ivy who came in and struck out 11 batters.

Ivy chipped away and won it in the bottom half of the last inning with two out. This was as exciting as it gets and the crowd was totally into it.

Considering most of their opponents were older, the Tottenham boys really pulled together and played great baseball.
