Festival to mark Friends of Wye Marsh anniversary

The Wye Marsh Wildlife Centre has gotten a financial boost to help it celebrate a significant milestone.
The 1,200-hectare wildlife area received $27,500 from the Ministry of Tourism’s Celebrate Ontario Fund in support of the Friends of Wye Marsh Anniversary Festival, scheduled for Sept. 11-13.
“This grant allows us … to share an exciting milestone for the Friends of Wye Marsh,” executive director Laurie Schutt stated in a press release. “We are celebrating our 25th anniversary and (would like to) say thanks to everyone for supporting our efforts at the marsh. We’re looking forward to a great celebration.”
The festival will begin with a fundraising dinner on Sept. 11, followed by a weekend of activities, including the Canadian Wildlife Woodcarving Championships.
Foodies will have the chance to taste wild game, courtesy of the Ontario Federation of Anglers and Hunters. A barbecue and demonstrations of recipes that incorporate honey produced by bees at the marsh will also take place.
Sept. 12 will include a barbecue and beer garden, followed by a live concert, while the next day will feature the inaugural Swamp Rally Challenge.
The afternoon will see Dr. William Shotyk, a professor at the University of Heidelberg in Germany, as well as director of the Institute of Environmental Geochemistry, share his research and passion for wetlands.
