More beds for Georgian Village

Addition means project’s cost to jump by $7 million

BY Laurie Watt   July 03, 2009 11:07

Georgian Village may already be an expanded Georgian Manor, but it’s about to get even bigger.
Simcoe County’s redevelopment of its Penetanguishene long-term-care home is getting 36 more beds.
“These are currently interim long-term-care beds at Huronia District Hospital,” said Jane Sinclair, the county’s health and cultural services general manager, who added the beds would become permanent.
The additional beds, however, mean the county will have to send its architects back to the drawing board to redesign the part of the campus development that includes the nursing home, previously at 107 beds.
With the new beds, the project cost is expected to ring in around $69 million, up from $62 million; the new beds also add four months to the development’s construction. Originally, construction of the nursing home was to start next spring, with a goal of 2012 occupancy.
At the heart of it all is Georgian Rendezvous, the village centre that will include a café, central dining room and lounge, wellness centre, library, classrooms, hair salon, worship centre and multi-purpose room with a stage. The hub of the development will also feature stores, a hair salon and a day program.
The nursing home and 42 assisted-living suites will also be part of Georgian Rendezvous. Residents will be able to enjoy an accessible rooftop garden, as well as a spa.
The project also features Georgian Terraces – affordable apartments for those aged 60 and up. It offers one- and two-bedroom units, allowing independent seniors to choose between life-lease garden townhomes and apartments, located in a three-storey building.
Fully accessible and with no stairs, the townhouses will feature an attached garage, rear patio and enclosed porch.
