Kevin Lord event raises $6,200 for cancer centre

A portion of the proceeds from the Kevin Lord Memorial Beeton Ball Hockey League fundraiser held recently will be given to the new Simcoe Muskoka Regional Cancer Centre at Royal Victoria Hospital in Barrie.

Al and Judy Lord organized the event in memory of their son Kevin who passed away from the disease. They made a presentation during the Beeton Ball Hockey League house league finals at Beeton Arena last Sunday.

A total of $6,200 was donated to the centre.

"Being that it's Father's Day, this is a wonderful gift to be donating," said Al Lord. "The only greater gift would be that Kevin would be here to make the presentation himself."

The Kevin Lord Memorial fund has raised in excess of $30,000 over that past three years.

In addition to the donation to the cancer treatment centre, funds raised also go to support the Minor Ball Hockey Travel Fund to help defray the cost of travelling for local teams.

Kevin Lord was a Beeton resident and well known for his involvement in ball hockey including playing on the national team.

Gary Nadalin, executive director of the Royal Victoria Hospital Foundation, accepted the donation on behalf of the hospital and treatment centre.

Royal Victoria Hospital is currently undergoing expansion to meet the needs of the growing population in the area.

"Construction has already started," said Nadalin. "The hospital is going to double in size. We have 299 beds right now and we will become a 400-bed hospital."

The total expansion will cost around $400 million and treat about 330,000 patients each year.

Nadalin said the funds will go toward the hospital's current "I Believe" campaign.
