Historic flights over county

June 19, 2009 15:06

As part of the centennial celebration of the first flight in Canada, the Canadian Forces is planning three flypasts on June 22 and 23.

The jets will be coming from bases in other parts of Ontario, but will fly over Simcoe County. The route includes Alliston, CFB Borden, Angus, Collingwood, Wasaga Beach and Barrie.

On June 22, a refurbished F-86 Sabre called the Hawk One will fly overhead. The jet will be painted to commemorate the Golden Hawks, the Canadian Air Force's demonstration team in the late 1950s and 1960s. On the same day, a CF-18 Hornet, also painted gold, will fly past residents.

On June 23 the Snowbirds flight demonstration will also fly overhead.

The exact times of the flights haven't been determined yet, and won't be available until closer to the event.

The first flight in Canada was in 1909, when the Silver Dart took off from Cape Breton, Nova Scotia.
