South Simcoe Marine unit on prowl

May 19, 2009 12:05

Officers of the South Simcoe Police marine unit were out in force over the long weekend, covering the Holland River, Cook’s Bay and Kempenfelt Bay.
More than 30 vessels were checked on Victoria Day to see if their operators were following mandated safety regulations. On two occasions, police found people in boats that contained no life jackets, or any type of personal floatation device.
The owners of the boats were a 58-year-old man from North York and a 31-year-old man from Nobleton who were out fishing. They were charged and now could face fines of $230 per person if convicted. The men were given copies of a safe boating guide and ordered to shore, accompanied by the police boat.
Another craft was found without license numbers on the hull, which is required for all vessels with a 10-horsepower motor, or greater. A 59-year-old Mississauga man faces a fine if convicted.
However, police were pleased to report there were no liquor violations, or impaired boaters, found during the long weekend. Boaters are reminded that operators are responsible to ensure proper safety and distress equipment is kept on board at all times. These requirements are listed in the Transport Canada – Safe Boating Guide.
Marine patrols by the South Simcoe Police will continue during the spring, summer and fall. In the case of an emergency, they can be contacted by dialing 911 on a cell phone, or *16 to reach the Prescott Coast Guard.
