Town dips into reserves for Banting Homestead

BY Maija Hoggett   June 20, 2008 12:06

Free Admission

The Tottenham Conservation Area Advisory Committee wants to open the park to local residents for free during the week.

Committee members have asked council to allow New Tecumseth residents access to the area Monday to Thursday during the summer months.

Film Screening

Stars of the Town is premiering at the Tottenham Community Centre in July. The 30-minute video was filmed Sept. 25, 1948 in Tottenham by Reverend Leroy Massecar. The film is being shown July 4 at the Lions Hall in the Tottenham Community Centre as a part of Tottenham Community Week.

It will be screened at 4 p.m., 7 p.m. and 9 p.m.

DC Meeting

A public meeting for changes to the Development Charges bylaw is July 7.

Development charges are fees tacked on to new development to help pay for growth-related projects. Services affected include library, fire, joint police services, recreation, public works, roads, water and wastewater.

The meeting is at 7 p.m. in council chambers.

Banting Homestead

New Tecumseth is opting out of fundraising $500,000 for the Banting Homestead.

The decision won’t affect the town buying the property from the Ontario Historical Society Foundation.

Unless council changes its mind before a council meeting Monday night, a letter is being sent to the OHSF to waive the fundraising condition of the sale.

The condition was for the town’s benefit in a deal to buy the Banting Homestead from the Ontario Historical Society Foundation. It was to ensure the maintenance and repairs of buildings on the property, through financial or in-kind donations.

A Banting Homestead Fundraising Committee was set up this past winter. As a result, an awareness campaign has seen flyers sent out in the Weekend Herald and a website has been set up at restorethebantinghomestead.com. There’s also a link to the site at www.allistonherald.com.

July 2 the Nottawasaga Inn Resort is also hosting a fundraiser, Restore the Banting Homestead Hot Summer’s Night Dinner Gala.

New Tecumseth announced it was buying the property from the OHSF for $600,000 in January.

The sale is final June 30. It has also been recommended money from the Hydro-Electric Reserve Fund be transferred to pay for the property.
