Re: Editorial, April 23 Herald (Do the Job):

It’s not about the workload. That’s surface stuff because the committee structure away from (New Tecumseth) council was rendered useless when they went back to general government.

This council has a defined voting block and it’s at the very least 5-4 and but mostly 6-3.

What Dennis Egan and Barb Huson are pissed off about is their committees and projects didn’t fare well again this budget year.

Dennis is widely quoted by the SSR (South Simcoe Railway) people that there was ‘no way in hell’ or words to that affect (sic) that they would get the $150,000 that Jim Stone managed to get for them. Dennis wanted the $150,000 sent to his committee instead and they would determine how best to dispense those funds. Then Dennis walked out of a budget working session meeting after losing a vote on trying to get the garbage collection bill to be based on a per unit bases (sic), rather than keep it as it is on assessment value and hidden in the overall property tax bill.

Again, that was a loss to Jim Stone. Dennis, the only councillor who chairs a committee outside of council, runs the only committee which meets at 5 or 5:30 p.m. - prime work hours for a guy like Stone.

Barb also was upset that Jim managed to get a $100,000 account set up to allocate to the cultural groups. Barb was opposed to that. She wanted more study. The “share the work” stuff is gibberish. That’s not to say the overall point is not correct, but there are deeper more juicy matters at work.

And once again, if you’re going to write an editorial on local municipal politics, do some analysis first and scratch a surface.

Tony Veltri,
Alliston
