Further to last week’s update, reflecting and acknowledging the collective support to date from our community for the Utopia Conservation Area.

On Sat., June 2, 2007 we were fortunate to have a compost sale. This compost was donated by Envirem Technologies which operates a series of composing facilities in Atlantic Canada and donated a truckload of their finest compost, bark mulch and other soil products for our cause.

Not only did they donate the product but they also paid for its shipping all the way from New Brunswick. When it arrived, Dave Dobson very generously helped with the unloading with his front-end loader. This sale raised $2,104 which almost pays for the annual insurance costs associated with the park and our community group.

Thank you Envirem Technologies and thanks to everyone who came out to make our event a sold-out success.

Folks, please keep in mind the fundraiser to be held on Thurs., July 10. This concert will feature Micky Dolenz (formerly of The Monkees) as well as the opening band, The Spoons. Both Micky and The Spoons, having heard about our community and the efforts to restore the gristmill and conservation area, wanted to lend their support and the idea of a benefit concert began to take shape.

The concert, entitled I’m A Believer, will be held at the Capitol Event Theatre in Toronto on Thurs., July 10. Doors open at 7 p.m. and the concert starts at 8 p.m. Tickets will be $50 plus handling charges with all proceeds going to help The Friends of the Utopia Gristmill and Park. Tickets are available by calling TicketWeb Canada at 1-888-222-6608.

For those interested in attending the concert, we are thinking of hiring a bus and heading to Toronto together. Please call Linda Sjerps at 705-728-8894 so we can keep track of your plans and as the event gets closer, can organize travel.

Our committee meets the first Monday evening of each month from 7:30 p.m. to 9 p.m. Many hands make light and fun work, so we welcome all who might be interested to come and participate in our meetings. Please call Linda at 705-728-8894 for meeting locations and information. If meetings are not your thing, there are other ways you can contribute. Just let us know of your interest.

Over the next couple of months, we’ll be working on a website, park signage and hopefully, a couple of grant applications.

We have lots of work ahead of us but know that together all is possible.
