It is a wonderful life and don’t you forget it.

By all the signs, the 54 Plus seniors are living it to the fullest as is evidenced by our honorary member Pauline Taylor who just returned from a six-week tour of Spain and London (remember honorary members are 85 years of age).

She shared some tidbits of her trip over coffee and birthday cake at our general meeting on Mon., April 21. There were 40 members in attendance and that included eight of our recent new members. The centre is thrilled with the interest being shown by many new seniors who have joined us this year. With all this new enthusiasm it is keeping us busy and we are endeavouring to plan events that will continue to keep our members interested and active.

At this meeting the guest speaker, Laura Lynn Bourassa from the Alzheimers Society, explained that keeping an active mind and healthy body are two excellent ways to stave off the onset of this dreadful disease.

The 54 Plus Seniors offers one way to do this by getting down to the centre on Wednesdays at 1 p.m. to take part in the tai chi classes and another way is to learn to play bid euchre. That will most certainly challenge your mind.

The results of the bid euchre on Thurs., April 17 were Peter Brown and Marion Boyda. On Mon., April 21 winners were Al Champagne and Shirley Hanrahan and regular euchre winners were Russell Wilson and Ena Hetherington, who by the way is in her 93rd year. How’s that for an active mind!

Bridge results for Fri., April 18 were winners Dorothy Edgar, Alvin Murphy and Eva Broad.

The Spring Craft and Bake Sale is all set for this Saturday. The weather should be great so plan to visit the Gibson Centre to see what our vendors have for your Mother’s Day gift giving and rest a while over tea or buy some homemade goodies to take home.

Tickets for our ham dinner on Sat., May 10 will be on sale as well. Plan to bring your mom or daughter to enjoy an evening of fellowship and stay and play cards if you wish. The cost is $12.

We still have room for at least 12 to 15 more for our trip to the 1,000 Islands in October so if you are interested call Marilyn at 705-434-9612 or go down to the hall and sign up.

We were sorry to learn of the passing of one of our members, Sue Grimshaw on April 17. Our condolences go out to her family.

Keep watching this column for other exciting events being planned to keep your life active and healthy.

A final note: the Town of New Tecumseth is asking for nominations for Senior of the Year Awards. If you have someone in mind who you think deserves the recognition let us know. I’m sure the ones who are picked will still be living active lives.
