Bell settle on new site for tower near Thornton

BY Kurtis Elsner   July 20, 2007 15:07

Bell Mobility has selected a new location for a cellular tower near Thornton that caused public outcry earlier in February.

The new proposal will see the 70-metre tower built on the property at 6831 County Road 27, on the northeast corner of the intersection of the 6th Line. The tower itself will be about half a kilometre east of County Road 27, with access to the road from the 6th Line.

The information came before Essa council at a meeting July 11. Councillor Rick Newlove said he had heard no objections to the new site.

Bell Mobility is building the tower to respond to complaints of dropped calls and poor reception in Thornton and the surrounding area.

The previous site was just behind an auto mechanic lot at 6903 County Road 27, north of the current site. It created a stir in the community, with nearby residents raising concerns over potential health concerns and aesthetics associated with the tower. Both the townships of Innisfil and Essa had refused to support the previous location. The proposed tower location was on land in Innisfil, but because of the close proximity to Essa residents, Bell had to consult both townships.

At least 60 people attended a public information meeting held by Bell Feb. 28. Many  voiced concerns to Bell staff. Some residents offered suggestions for other locations, including their own properties.

Once Bell receives the necessary permits, it intends to start construction by August 1.
