Jan. 27, 2007 is just around the corner. ABC Canada is in the process of updating the official Family Literacy Day website, which is located at www.abc-canada.org. It includes information such as what's new this year, literacy tips, games, special offers and much more.
It also features the Munsch at Home Contest. One lucky Canadian family will win a visit from best-selling children's author Robert Munsch to attend their ABC Canada Family Literacy Day celebration Jan. 27.
It's fun and easy to enter. Families just download an application form from the Essa Public Library website at www.essa.library.on.ca. Write a short description on how you plan to celebrate FLD and mail it to the ABC Canada Literacy Foundation.
Submissions are judged on originality of ideas. The winning family will receive a one-hour visit with Munsch. In addition, Munsch will make a special visit to the contest winner's local public library or literacy organization (winner's choice) following the family visit.
Make your first step in January to better health.
Over the years, many things have been added to library resources, including talking books, videos, computers, and now there are tools for personal walking-for-fitness programs.
With help from the Good for Life program, 13 local libraries, including the Essa Public Library, is offering step-counting pedometer packs for loan, the same way you would borrow a book.
The pedometer comes with a personalized 10,000 Steps tracking booklet for the user to record their progress over a 12-week period. Libraries will sign out the pedometers for a three-week loan, with the expectation they will be renewed four times. Using the 10,000-Step booklet will help the borrowers walk their way to the goal of 10,000 steps a day - the suggested guideline for the amount of walking needed for an active lifestyle.

The club is responsible for maintaining over 200 kilometres of Ontario Federation of Snowmobile Club trails in South Simcoe.
