If you know what the strange object is beneath this helicopter over Beeton this afternoon, let know by sending us an e-mail at herald@simcoe.com.

Do you know what this strange object is?

BY Staff   February 04, 2010 14:02

Dave Morrison looked up this afternoon (Thursday) outside his home on the 9th Line near Beeton about 1:30 p.m. and was greeted by the strange sight of this helicopter that was towing an unusual large, round wheel-like object beneath it.

He couldn’t figure out what it was, so he snapped a couple of photos of it and then called the Herald to ask if we knew what it was.

Well, we know a lot of things, but Dave stumped us on this one.

We thought we’d post a photo of it here and see if any of our readers know what it is.

If you do, send us an e-mail at herald@simcoe.com and let us know so we can share it with everyone.

RESPONSES:

John in Clearwater B.C. writes: They fly all over B.C. all the time, checking for minerals and such, that's all I know.

J. Paul Bellis of Beeton writes: The photo you have looks like it is of a magnetometer, but they come in many shapes and sizes. There was going to be a gravitometric survey in this part of Ontario as well. Why don't you check with the Geological Survey of Canada, or see if the helicopter submitted a flight plan?

Barry Foster writes: That is a VTEM antenna  I believe. It is used to measure magnetic structures on the surface. Look here: http://www.geotech.ca/

Jason Mason writes: The ring under a the helicopter is called a sonar ring. It sends souds waves down to the ground. It's used to detect minerals in the ground. The mines up in Timmins use it all the time.
