Volunteers tried their best to save deer

February 02, 2010 16:02

On Thurs., Jan. 21 the Alliston & District Humane Society received a call about a young deer injured while caught in a fence.

The caller, Wendy Furtado, freed the deer but it was apparent that it had sustained severe injuries to its hind leg.

When we arrived at the deer's location in Adjala at 9 p.m., Wendy and her partner Jay Henry were waiting. The three of us went into the bush through deep snow and with a great difficulty Wendy (who did most of the work) brought the deer to our vehicle.

Unfortunately this story does not have a happy ending as the following day Dr. Cynthia Post had to euthanize the deer due to the extent of its injuries.

No matter the ending we would like to commend Wendy and Jay for a stellar effort. We could use many more people like them.

Ernest Ogle,

ADHS
