Simcoe county students and staff reach out to Haiti

BY Matthew Talbot, Staff   January 26, 2010 12:01

SIMCOE COUNTY - A number of Simcoe County District School Board (SCDSB) schools are doing what they can to help the people of Haiti.

On Tues., Jan. 12, a 7.0 magnitude earthquake rocked the Haiti, which shares a small Atlantic Ocean island with the Dominican Republic. Hundreds of thousands of people are estimated to be dead, and millions are suffering from injury and the loss of their homes.

Several SCDSB schools have held loonie and toonie drives and other fundraisers already.

Here's some of what the schools are still doing:

• Alliston Union Public School is participating in World Vision's 'Hearts for Haiti' fundraising campaign, which runs until Jan. 29. Students can write their names on a 'Hearts for Haiti' heart for a minimum donation of $1.

• Assikinack Public School is holding 'Operation Donation: Haiti loonie and gtoonie Drive', which was initiated by two Grade 7 students. The goal of the drive is to raise $1,000 and all proceeds will go to the Red Cross.

• Byng Public School is working with the company Midwest Metals to raise funds for Haiti through a metal recycling drive. From Jan. 25 to Feb. 5, students, staff and the local community are invited to bring in scrap metal items (eg. pop/soup cans, electronics, appliances, BBQs, batteries, etc.) to be recycled. Bins will be available for donations on weekdays from 8:30 a.m. to 9:30 a.m., and 6 p.m. to 7 p.m. All money raised will be donated to the Red Cross.

• Elmvale District High School's chapter of 'Free the Children' has embarked on a donation campaign to raise funds.

• Regent Park Public School has posted a fundraising information page on their website: http://rep.scdsb.on.ca/haiti.htm.

• Steele Street Public School began fundraising early last week to assist the citizens of Haiti, and has already raised over $1,000. Plans for a bake sale are also underway. This week, a Grade 7 class will partner with a Grade 5/6 class to organize a penny drive. The school will also be inviting students to bring a monetary contribution to "dress down" in pajamas on Wed., Jan. 27.

• Sunnybrae Public School has begun efforts to raise funds for Haiti and has already raised over $150.

• Tecumseth Beeton Elementary School is hosting a 'Helping Hands for Haiti' event in which students can purchase a "hand" for $1 or $2 that will go toward Haitian disaster relief.

• Tottenham Public School is holding a loonie drive to raise funds for the Red Cross Disaster Relief Fund. For every dollar raised, students will be given a maple leaf with Haiti's coat of arms on it to sign and post on display in the school's lobby. Students have also adopted ongoing support for Haiti as their global citizen project this year.

• Warminster Public School's Learning Centre sold bags of popcorn for $1 on January 22, with all proceeds going to the Red Cross. This week, the is holding a week-long loose change drive.
