Low turn out for budget meeting

BY Maija Hoggett, Staff   January 20, 2010 17:01

A public meeting for New Tecumseth's budget drew out candidates for this year's municipal election.

Seven people showed up to the public budget meeting, held last Thursday in New Tecumseth council chambers in Alliston. Of those people, three are registered candidates for the 2010 elections.

New Tecumseth is working to pass the 2010 budget in early February.

As it stands, the owner of an average home priced at $268,744 will be paying an extra $76.46 this year on the municipal portion of their tax bill.

Water and wastewater rates are also on the rise. Currently residents are paying $1.38 per cubic metre of water, or a base service charge of $13.80 each month. Starting in April, those rates are expected to increase to $1.52 per cubic metre. People paying the base service charge would see that cost go up to $15.20 per month.

At the meeting, Bob Marrs - a candidate for Alliston's Ward 1 in the October election - asked for work to be done on the ditches in the Hillcrest subdivision in Alliston.

"You can lose your children in them," Marrs told council.

While Marrs was the only one to speak at the meeting, the town received a letter from Donna Jebb about hard-topping the 20th Sideroad. Jebb has been pushing for the hard-topping for several years, but was out of the country when the public meeting was held.

Jebb operates a chicken farm on the 20th Sideroad. Putting a hard topping on the road is for biosecurity and safety, said Jebb's letters to the town.

"Please understand that the regulations are getting tighter and tighter for farmers to provide and prove that all rules are being followed for safe and healthy foods for the people of Ontario and beyond," wrote Jebb in her e-mail.

Jebb explained that when trucks first drive onto their property, they have to stop and spray their tires with disinfectant before driving further. With mud and dirt on the trucks from the sideroad, "it makes it very difficult to ensure that the spray is covering the vehicle."

The next working session for New Tecumseth's budget is tonight (Tues., Jan. 19) at 7 p.m. in council chambers, 10 Wellington St. E. in Alliston. The meeting is open to the public.
