New Tecumseth shuttle bus expands routes

Service is being well received say operators

BY Maija Hoggett, Staff   January 20, 2010 16:01

NEW TECUMSETH - An in-town shuttle service set up in New Tecumseth late last year is expanding.

The Krasman Centre started the shuttle service in December between Tottenham, Beeton and Alliston. Shuttle services are now being offered in Alliston, with one route on Victoria Street and one on King Street.

With funding from the United Way of Greater Simcoe County and the Krasman Centre, the shuttle service is a year-long pilot project. The Krasman Centre started it as a way to help people get mobile within the town, whether it's for socializing, appointments or just to get out of the house.

Since the service started, Krasman Centre staff member Amy Thompson said there has been a good response to the service. Part of that response has been that people living in Alliston also feel isolated and need a way of getting around the community.

There are no scheduled days for the Alliston shuttle. Thompson said it will run a couple of days a week based on need.

The shuttle is a five-person van and people must register to use it.

The Tottenham, Beeton and Alliston service runs Monday, Thursday and Saturdays.

On those days, the shuttle is northbound in the morning, leaving from Tottenham at 9:30 a.m., stopping in Beeton at 9:45, with the last stop being in Alliston. The shuttle heads back to the southern part of town in the afternoon, leaving Alliston at 4 p.m., dropping people off in Beeton around 4:15 p.m. and finishing in Tottenham.

People are picked up in centralized locations in each community. Those locations are given to people when they register for the service.

The cost for each ride is $2 and pre-registration is required.

To register call the Krasman Centre at 705-435-0054.
