Gord McInnes

McInnes officially enters New Tec race

Running for Ward 2 Alliston seat

BY Staff   January 14, 2010 19:01

NEW TECUMSETH - As reported as a strong possibility here Monday, Gord McInnes has now officially entered the race for New Tecumseth council in the coming fall municipal election.

Campaigning on a platform for a united New Tecumseth, addressing the needs for seniors' housing and transportation, attracting a more diverse base of industry, and balancing recreational and cultural needs with the infrastructure we already have, the 20-year resident is taking at run at the new Ward 2 seat which encompasses the farthest southwest portion of Alliston.

"I will be a distinct voice of sober concerned second thought in all matters before council," said McInnes in a platform document released tonight.

The news brings to five the number of formally declared candidates for New Tecumseth council.

Monday Alliston attorney Kevin Kemp fied his papers for Deputy Mayor.

Mike MacEachern, the current New Tecumseth mayor, is seeking re-election. He officially filed his papers last week, but announced his intention in December.

Other registered candidates for the Oct. 25 municipal election include former Alliston councillor Bob Marrs, who is seeking a seat in Ward 1, the northwest corner of Alliston and current Tottenham councillor Jess Prothero who is seeking to retain his seat. That could be tricky since in the coming election the ward boundaries have been changed in New Tecumseth and Tottenham's representation will be reduced from two seats to one.

Should fellow councillor Jim Stone decide to run again and for the Tottenham seat, the two councillors will find themsevles pitted against one another.

Former councillor Gary Dorland says he is pondering another crack at council, but is holding off on an official nomination until others have filed.

Nomination forms for New Tecumseth council seats as well as updated nominations are available online at www.town.newtecumseth.on.ca.
