Local lawyer Kemp seeking deputy mayor's seat

NEW TECUMSETH - The race for a seat at New Tecumseth's council table is already heating up.

Today, (Monday) local lawyer Kevin Kemp filed his nomination papers for the deputy mayor's seat, currently held by Rick Milne. Milne has not yet filed or announced his intentions.

Aside from being a lawyer, Kemp has inked a name for himself in the Weekend Herald with his popular Cyni-side column, which often commented and critiqued the decisions of New Tecumseth council.

Mike MacEachern, the current New Tecumseth mayor, is also seeking re-election for his seat at the head of the table. He officially filed his papers last week, but announced his intention in December.

Other registered candidates for the Oct. 25 municipal election include former Alliston councillor Bob Marrs, who is seeking a seat in Ward 1, the northwest corner of Alliston and current Tottenham councillor Jess Prothero who is seeking to retain his seat. That could be tricky since in the coming election the ward boundaries have been changed in New Tecumseth and Tottenham's representation will be reduced from two seats to one. Should fellow councillor Jim Stone decide to run again and for the Tottenham seat, the two councillors will find themsevles pitted against one another.

Former councilor Gary Dorland is pondering another crack at council, but is holding off on an official nomination until others have filed. Gord McInnes is also expected to file papers for one of the three Alliston council seats, likely Ward 2, which is the southwestern most Alliston ward.

Nomination forms for New Tecumseth council seats as well as updated nominations are available online at www.town.newtecumseth.on.ca.
