Seniors' programs gearing back up

54 Plus Seniors Newsstand

BY Marilynn Cook, Columnist   January 07, 2010 17:01

As promised I am back and ready to report the seniors' activities again.

The executive has had its first meeting and are making plans for another busy year in 2010. We hope to see many new members and of course our past members taking the opportunity to join us for the three F's, fun, food and fellowship.

Plan to make a visit to our hall on the second floor of the Gibson Centre to see what activities we have to offer this year.

I have been told that shuffleboard has started up already. This is a mild exercise and is fun, so give Bill Murray a call at 705-435-0749 for more information on this.

The Friday craft group is meeting again from 9 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. and can always use more help in preparing the tray favours for Stevenson Memorial Hospital. Give Sharon a call at 705-435-5719 if you are interested in joining this group. The more the merrier!

Tai chi and ballroom dancing are not set to go yet but I know that our dance instructor, Chris is itching to teach some moves to some new dancers. Anyone, any age even with two left feet is welcome to come out on Wednesday evenings from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. to join in for some fun and socializing.

Our Bid euchre games continued throughout the month of December but unfortunately because I was not reporting the results, Lorraine Brown was not able to get her name in the paper for high score on one Monday night and Joy Graham was not able to brag about her high score of 379 on one Thursday afternoon.

If you want to get your name in the paper then you had better get out to play on Mondays at 7 p.m. or Thursdays at 1 p.m. and show your skills.

The winners Thurs., Dec. 31 were Don Bray and Helen Hanna and for Mon., Jan. 4 winners were Mary Kimber and Betty Rhodes.

By next week I should be ready to report the Friday bridge results but no decision has been made yet whether we will be having regular euchre on Saturday evenings.

The first general meeting for 2010 is Mon., Jan. 18 at noon. It is a pot-luck lunch followed by a report from our executive and a presentation from guest speaker June Berndt who will demonstrate some non-invasive techniques for dealing with arthritis, stress and anxiety.

If you have been thinking of becoming a member of the 54 Plus seniors then 2010 is the year to join in and you are welcome to attend this meeting. Bring along a salad, special casserole or dessert and join us for lunch and take in this informative presentation.

January is new and renewed membership month so be sure to contact Donna Train at 705-435-9994 to let her know your are interested.

I have been laid up now for nearly eight weeks since my unfortunate accident. I am more than ready to get back in the swing of things again but will probably be needing some help. Let me know what is happening and I'll report it in this column.

I look forward to getting back to play some bid euchre too and join in on the three f's with everyone. See you soon.
