Hornets go three-for-three in 46 hours

Coach proud of hardworking team

ALLISTON - The Alliston Hornets went three-for-three in 46 hours last weekend, winning games against Stayner, Midland and league rivals, Penetang.

"Our guys came to play as first place was on the line," Hornets coach Norm Costello said of the Friday game. "We had a great start scoring three times in the opening period."

Jordan Crandell, Daniel Letour and Jeff Henderson, in his first appearance for the home team, each scored to take the Hornets 3-0 up against the Stayner Siskins at the end of the first.

Henderson, 20, previously played tier-two hockey with the Newmarket Hurricanes.

Costello said the second period saw the teams even out, with the Hornets gaining a fourth goal at 4:24 on the clock from another newcomer, Ashton Duthie, who scored against his former team.

The Hornets picked up Duthie, a defenceman, in a trade with Stayner for Garrett Graves.

"The third period was all Alliston as we scored three more times, two of them on the power play," Costello said.

Duthie scored a second and Andre Lessard and Chad Camirand each netted goals to bring the Hornets to a 7-1 victory over Stayner.

Hornets vs. Flyers

Alliston travelled to Midland for the first time this season Saturday for their second game of the weekend.

"Midland had just come off an 8-0 thrashing of the Schomberg Cougars on Friday night," Costello said adding Midland kept up the fury, playing hard all night and taking the game into overtime. Kyle McDowell netted the winning goal 55 seconds into overtime, his second of the night. Eric Shannon and Camirand also picked up goals in the 4-3 win.

Hornets vs. Penetang

On Sunday, the Hornets played host to Penetang in a special benefit game at the New Tec Rec Complex.

The proceeds of the game went to benefit the Stevenson Memorial Hospital and its CT scanner. The Hornets came away with a 4-0 win. McDowell lead the way with a another two-goal effort - Mike Campeau and Jordan Crandell each picked up one goal - and goalie Breton MacKinnon earned his third shutout of the season.

"Looking back at the weekend, I couldn't be more pleased with the way our guys handled the heavy workload of three games in 46 hours," Costello said. "We went five for 17 on the power play and 13 for 13 on the penalty kill in the three games."

The Hornets out-shot their opponents 139 to 81 and outscored them 15 to 4.

Costello said five players - McDowell, Campeau, Randy Cox, Kyle Montpetit and Cody Rhodes - also pulled extra duty and played in the Sunday afternoon all-star game against the Western Ontario Junior C Hockey League in Mount Forest.

The Georgian Bay Mid-Ontario Junior Hockey League all stars took an early lead 3-1 against the Western Junior C team with one of the goals coming from the Hornets' Cox.

But the Western team overcame the deficit and had to hold on for a 5-4 win.

The win gives the Western league home-ice advantage in the first round of the Ontario Hockey Association playoffs.

This week, the Hornets are in Stayner Saturday and Fergus on Sunday with no home game at the New Tec Rec Complex.
