Car crash slows down columnist

54 Plus Seniors Newsstand

BY Marilynn Cook   November 25, 2009 19:11

Some of the 54 Plus members have nicknamed me "The Energizer Bunny" but after a recent accident I'm afraid my batteries will be dead for the next couple of months. Even though I will be temporarily out of commission until the new year, I will attempt to continue to write this column to keep our members and friends informed of club activities.

I want to thank all those who have rallied around me until I return. I can certainly use your help to keep this article informative so please call me at 905-729-2717 if you have some news to share. I will miss everyone and especially my bid euchre games. I hope the new players who took some lessons with me will feel confident to join in on our regular games anytime. I may need you to give some lessons when I get back.

The winners of Thurs., Nov. 12 bid euchre were Leo Joyce and Laureen Little and for Thurs., Nov. 19 were Jack Dilliott and Karen Pedlar. Winners of Mon., Nov. 16 were Russell Cowen and Mary Joyce and for Mon., Nov. 23 were Leo Joyce and Mary Joyce.

That fateful Sat., Nov. 14 regular euchre winners were Marg Hunter and Maurice Hetherington and for Sat., Nov. 21 were Laureen Little and Maurice Hetherington. Saturday night euchre will resume in the new year.

Bridge results for Fri., Nov. 13 were Lois Shannon, Eva Broad and Pat Odorizzi and for Fri., Nov. 20 were Marion McFadden, Bob Harper and a tie for Rhea

Alderson and Alvin Murphy.

Two weeks ago on Fri., Nov. 13 we held a wonderful roast beef dinner attended by 84 members and friends. Door prizes were given out to Joan Bonin, Marjory

Goymor, Jim Speers and Al Champagne. Table prizes given to the lucky ones sitting at a place setting without a black cat were Pauline Taylor, Gwen Prentice, Joanne Harris and Doreen Paquette. After dinner, 32 remained to play bid euchre while a band of hardworking volunteers cleaned up.

The high scores went to Shirley Fulcher and Isabelle Hicks and booby prizes were awarded to Dorothy Lundy and Florence Blanchard. Russell Cowen was the lucky winner of the 50-50 draw. By all accounts everyone had a most enjoyable time.

Our last event for 2009 is our Christmas dinner to be held on Wed., Dec. 9 at

6 p.m. It is a full-course turkey dinner with musical entertainment by Bob Vetro of the Alliance Church. He will play a variety of 1950s and 1960s music and be joined by special guest Patsy D. Cline. Some carols will be sung as well.

Tickets are on sale now at the main desk of The Gibson Centre or from executive members at our regular activities. Cost is $15 for members and $18 for non-members. Get your tickets early, as seating is limited. Also, a reminder to bring along your donations for food bank and toy drive. I'm really hoping to be there too!

The clay jewelry workshop is still on for this Mon., Nov. 30 from 10 a.m. to noon in our hall. If you want to sign up please give Elaine Gittins a call at 705-434-4982. If we have more than 10 people it will only cost $10 and you will get to take your finished work to keep for yourself or give to someone special as a Christmas gift.

I was just told that our tai chi classes are finished now until the new year but shuffleboard will continue on until further notice. I'm sorry Mike that I will not be your dancing partner for a while but I understand the other girls are getting more dances with the gentlemen.

Well I think I have run out of energy for now but as I gradually recharge I will attempt to keep my letter coming. I really miss everyone and hope to see you at the Christmas Dinner. Save me a seat.
