Tottenham, ON - Last Tuesday, the St. Thomas Aquinas Stingers hosted Barrie Central Collegiate for two volleyball games. The senior and junior teams were in action for their last regular season games.

The juniors were the first teams to play. The Stingers came out fighting, but found themselves in an early hole. The Stingers put up 12 points in the first set, with great serving by Tyler Smokler. The Stingers put up some offence towards the end of the first set, but it was not enough and they lost the set 25-12.

In the second set the Stingers were again down early, but a great team effort sparked a six-point rally that put Central on their guard. Despite the rally, Central was able to maintain their lead and win the second set 25-14.

In the third set the Stingers were able to match every point that Central was putting on the board. With solid defense at the net the Stingers were able to keep the score close, but were unable to come out with a set win, and lost to Barrie Central 25-18.

Assistant coach Mitch Fenech said "simple mistakes on both defensive and offensive sides of the net," were the crucial reasons for the loss.

"The team let their mistakes take control of their game," said Fenech.

The Junior team now waits for a playoff opponent. They finished the season with a disappointing 1-4 record.

The senior Stingers started their game with strong defense, keeping Central close in the first set. Central grabbed a quick lead, however, and won 25-14.

In the second set, the Stingers were able to keep the score close with crucial hits by Simon Bernardi. Despite the offence, and great defense at the net, the Stinger's lost the second set 25-20.

In the third set, the Stingers dominated most of the way, as they were holding an 18-16 points lead on Central. Coach Matthew King said "being up two points was huge on a team who had just won bronze at the Georgian tournament."

Central was able to battle back and regained the lead, winning the third set 25-21.

"We didn't have the ability to finish," said King after the game. The Stingers now wait for a playoff opponent and finished the season with a 2-3 record.
