But how will we get to the old farmhouse and pool?

July 01, 2009 22:07

New Tecumseth was left out of the funding which is currently being provided by the Building Canada Fund.

This fund is a flagship infrastructure program promoting a stronger economy, a cleaner environment and better communities while addressing local and regional infrastructure such as core national railways, drinking water,  wastewater, public transit, green energy and community component projects in towns with a population of under 100,000 residents.

Does anyone wonder why?

The restoration of the Banting Homestead is the top priority of our mayor and town council with rebuilding of the Rotary Pool running a close second.  Are these money pits considered infrastructure?  I think not!

A separate application was made in order to restore the Monument Building and funding was received whereas Essa, Adjala-Tosorontio, Innisfil and West Gwillimbury applied and received funds essentially for road paving and improvement and that is as it should be.

Now can anyone tell me why, when this town is in desperate need of a public transit system, did our mayor and town council opt to apply for funds to restore a casket factory, an old farmhouse and outbuildings, a 30-year-old swimming pool and who knows what else?

When did our mayor and town council inform the populace of this town that the Building Canada Fund was available and what it entailed? Slipped another one right by us. I am not surprised!

Could it be because additional funds became available for public transit besides the Gas Tax Rebate and the Goods and Services Tax Rebate and they wanted to keep us in the dark?

And I thought my head was spinning because of my age. I can't keep up to the subterfuge.

In my opinion, a lack of transparency exists on the part of our mayor and town council. When an important fund of this magnitude is introduced the onus is on the council to inform the citizens immediately. Finding out about said fund, after the fact, does not sit well with us and brings to mind a lot of questions which need to be asked.

Think about it and tell us what you think.
