St. Paul's Contract

Maystar General Contractors have won the contract for the construction of a new St. Paul's School in Alliston.

Maystar is a general contractor based out of Vaughan and bid $7.8 million for the project. The bid is $440,000 over what the Ministry of Education Development Charges funding allocated for the project.

Plans for the new school include 16 classrooms and room for 489 students. It is being constructed in a new residential development in north Alliston at the end of Church Street. Construction of the school is expected to start this summer, with the target being a September 2010 opening.

Pupil Accommodation Review Committee

Simcoe Muskoka Catholic District School Board trustees Clayton Ferguson and Theresa Pinder have been chosen for a pupil accommodation review committed for Georgian West, Essa and Borden schools.

The review will start as soon as possible in September. Schools included in the review are Our Lady of Grace School in Angus, Prince of Peace School in Borden and Our Lady of Assumption in New Lowell. Collingwood's St. Mary's School and St. Noel Chabanel in Wasaga Beach are also included.

The review will look at the number of students and staffing to see if changes can be made to improve the working and learning environments.

Orillia Review

The public will have a chance to comment on Orillia's pupil accommodation review in October.

Suggestions in the review are to maintain the status quo for Foley Catholic School and Notre Dame Catholic School and to replace St. Bernard's School, which was recommended by the pupil accommodation committee and still needs Ministry of Education funding and approval.

Consolidating the Monsignor Lee and Guardian Angels student bodies at the existing Monsignor Lee sit is also recommended.

June 11 the board learned it will be getting $12.4 million from the Ministry of Education. The money is in response to the recommendations and decision that will come from the pupil accommodation review process.

Some trustees are concerned that the Ministry of Education money determines which recommendation the board will go with.

SMCDSB director of education Michael O'Keefe said the money isn't directed for any of the specific options.
