Seniors serving breakfast on Canada Day

54 Plus Seniors Newsstand

BY Marilynn Cook, Columnist   June 26, 2009 18:06

Fresh sweet and juicy local strawberries, great guests and delightful music provided by Al Leslie on his electric keyboard were the main ingredients that made for a very pleasant evening last Saturday night at the 54 Plus Seniors Centre. Also, thanks to the dozen or more women and men who set up the tables, prepared the food and cleaned up after, and the recipe for a successful Strawberry Social was complete.

A chance to dance or sing along to some old and new tunes followed dinner. Everyone stayed to participate and several door prizes and spot dance prizes were given out.

A special thank you to June Watson for her beautiful centrepiece flowers.

A new date has now been set for our 41st anniversary picnic. Come rain or shine on Mon., July 27 from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the PPG Pavilion on Church Street South in Alliston the picnic will go on, so please plan to join us.

Just bring along your favorite dish, casserole or salad and a cushion, blanket or chair. Anniversary cake will be served for dessert along with refreshments. We hope to see our honourary members out to this event so if you want to come give me a call at 905-729-2717 to arrange for transportation.

The draw for the handmade bench crafted by our member Ralph Layman will be on Sat., July 11 so if you still want to purchase a ticket get on down to our hall and buy one today. Tickets are $2 each or three for $5.

Bid euchre winners for Thurs., June 18 were Ginny Plets and Kay Mooney and for Mon., June 22 winners were Ginny Plets again and Marion McFadden.

There was no regular euchre last week because of our Strawberry Social and our last night for regular euchre until September will be this Saturday at 7 p.m.

Bridge winners for Fri., June 19 were Ruth Dermott, Enid Graham and Signa Lemcke.

By the way our organ has found a new home thanks to Al Leslie.

The Gibson Centre is hosting a Canada Day celebration next Wednesday and our seniors have offered to put on a pancake breakfast served with juice, tea and coffee from 9:30 a.m. to 11 am. so please plan to take in the festivities that day.

Other than our picnic on July 27 no other definite plans have been made to round out our activities until the fall unless a decision to participate in the Potato Festival parade is made.

The 54 Plus executive are looking forward to a summer break. See you at the picnic.
