Essa firefighters extinguish hot spots after putting out an abandoned-vehicle fire north of Egbert yesterday.

Fire destroys abandoned SUV

BY Kurtis Elsner   June 26, 2009 09:06

Loud explosions and thick black smoke tipped Egbert residents off to an abandoned car fire just north of the community yesterday afternoon (June 25).

Just past 4 p.m., a resident called 911 after hearing loud bangs and seeing smoke on the 9th Line of Essa, just north of the 10th Sideroad.

Essa firefighters found an abandoned sport utility vehicle fully engulfed in flames. The blaze was quickly doused, but the vehicle was completely destroyed, leaving not much but a charred shell.

The SUV had been parked on a rarely-used driveway on a rural property. Thick shrubs and trees blocked much of the view from the road.

Another black burn patch near a tree was also visible.

Officials said the fire is suspected to have been set deliberately.

There were no injuries.

At the scene, police said it was too early to say why the vehicle had been left there. It wasn't immediately known if it was stolen. The fire destroyed most of the vehicle's identifying features.
