Tottenham Pits now off limits

Police laying trespassing charges

BY Staff   June 23, 2009 22:06

It’s been a popular local swimming hole for area teens for a number of years, but now a dip in the pit will cost you a quite a few bucks.

Tresspassing charges were laid against seven people after they were caught swimming at the Tottenham Pits Sunday.

Caledon OPP said they have received repeated calls about people entering the property and swimming in the quarry, which is on Old Highway 9, south of Tottenham.

Police said the sandy shores combined with the deep water make the area tempting, but they warn it is dangerous. Limited access to the quarry would make it difficult for paramedics and fire crews to get to a victim should someone get hurt, police said.

The owner of the property has installed gates and put up no trespassing signs, but for the past few years people have persisted to swim at the site. For a time he even hired security guards to monitor the property.

Neighbours and the owner continue to call police when trespassers are spotted.

Police said they intend to charge anyone caught trespassing at the old gravel pit.
