Buy a block and build a field house

Council asked to front-end funds to be raised

BY Maija Hoggett, Staff   June 15, 2009 18:06

Beeton is coming together and building the field house at Mel Mitchell Fields brick by brick.

The Buy a Block fundraiser is to raise the final $50,000 for a field house at the sports fields on the 9th Line northeast of Beeton.

The fundraiser will see 400 blocks sold for $100, $500, $1,000 or $5,000. Once the fundraiser is complete, Beeton Coun. Richard Norcross said the names of the donors will be listed at the field house, but the details of that are still being worked out.

In order to see work start on the field house this year, Norcross has asked the town to loan the group $50,000. Norcross said the money would be paid back as soon as possible. The majority of council voted in favour of the loan Monday night, with approval for it expected at next week's council meeting.

At Monday night's committee of the whole meeting Coun. Barbara Huson said the town's budget for the field house should stay where it is.

She has concerns that the group is asking for more money after council approved a scaled back version of the field house in this year's budget.

In the budget council also approved an additional $50,000 for the estimated $177,500 project. The town's total commitment for the project is $100,000, with the remainder of the money coming from fundraising efforts.

The loan is needed because some businesses that had promised materials are unable to meet the commitment.

"There is an economic downturn and some companies aren't able to donate what they would have been able to donate a year ago," said Norcross.

Once complete, the building will be 1,320 square feet, with estimated construction costs being $111 per square foot.

To support the Buy a Block fundraiser, call Norcross at 905-729-2693 or Jodi Longland at 905-729-1260. Blocks are also through the South Simcoe United soccer club and TNT Express Football.
