Fire Marshal investigating downtown blaze

BY Kurtis Elsner, Staff   June 15, 2009 11:06

The Ontario Fire Marshal is investigating a fire in a downtown Alliston restaurant early this morning (Mon., June 15) that closed Victoria Street.

Early this morning New Tecumseth firefighters were called to a fire at Time Out Sports Bar and Café near the corner of Victoria Street and Centre Street, across from Giant Tiger. Victoria Street was closed between Church Street and Centre Street while fire crews put out the blaze.

Fire Chief Dan Heydon said at this point the fire doesn't look suspicious. The Ontario Fire Marshal's Office has been called in to determine the cause.

Heydon said the fire was put out within about 20 minutes. Firefighters are still on scene because of smoke damage in the restaurant and the two upstairs apartments.

Heydon said a male tenant in one of the upstairs apartments called in the fire after he was awakened by his smoke detector and smoke in his apartment. The man and a female tenant in another apartment were checked by paramedics at the scene and were not injured. A cat also escaped unharmed.

Hydro and gas were turned off in the building for the investigation. It is not known when the tenants will be allowed back in as the investigation could take a couple of days.

Time Out opened in Alliston in March. It is owned by Kris Sooknanan, who also operates the Hava Java Café in downtown Beeton.
