Boy rescued from under railway trestle

A 13-year-old boy spent a harrowing couple of hours suspended underneath a railway trestle 200 feet above the Nottawasaga River yesterday (Sat., June 13) in Essa Township.

At 5:40 p.m. Nottawasaga OPP got the call. Police discovered that around 4:30pm two 13 year-old youths were bicycling in the area of the Canadian Pacific Railway tracks north of Baxter. One of them decided to climb up the trestles and walk underneath the tracks. The youth was unable to get back down however, and told his friend to go for help.

Nottawasaga OPP, Essa Fire and the Simcoe County Paramedic Services responded.

Police en route to the scene called CP Rail and asked them to stop all trains along the line. One train was heard in a distance and stopped successfully at the bridge.

Police relied on the expertise of serval local emergency services personnel in the rescue including Essa firefighters, New Tecumseth Firefighters, Barrie City Police and Hydro One crews.

The boy was successfully lowered from underneath the train trestle, carried up to the ambulance and then transported to Royal Victoria Hospital in Barrie as a precaution. He was uninjured.

“Nottawasaga OPP would like to extend its appreciation and heartfelt thanks to all the above services who worked well together to make this rescue a great success,” said Provincial Constable Lisa Jacques.
