Marilynn Cook

Strawberry Social next Saturday at 6 p.m.

54 Plus Newsstand

BY Marilynn Cook   June 10, 2009 20:06

Is summer really coming next weekend? I certainly hope so because we need heat and sun to get our strawberries plump and juicy in time for our Strawberry Social being held on Sat., June 20 at 6 p.m. We will be serving a cold buffet along with the strawberries and after dinner we will have music by Al Lewis so we can socialize and dance if you wish.

Tickets are $12 and are now on sale at the front desk of the Gibson Centre or at our card games. Please call me at 905-729-2717 if you want to reserve early as seating will be limited.
The last general meeting until September will be this Mon., June 15 at noon. Bring your favorite casserole, salad or dessert and join us for a pot-luck lunch followed by a report from our executive and a talk by our guest Brenda Wood on the Healing Power of Laughter.
We will celebrate our June, July and August birthdays with dessert, tea and coffee after.
Unfortunately our plans have been changed for our 41st anniversary picnic so watch this column for new location, date and time.
We currently have 127 members paid up this year. There are still some who have not renewed so if you intend to renew please give Donna Train a call at 705-435-9994. It is $20 for singles and $35 for couples.
We now have 40 honourary members and we hope to see you out to our picnic.
The 54 Plus Seniors have been very active over the 41 years and hope to continue to provide activities for seniors in the New Tecumseth area. We welcome new members to join us anytime as we need some younger bodies to keep the club going for the years to come.
The executive has had a busy year and reports that our cards, dinners and other activites continue to provide the much needed income to keep us going at the Gibson Centre.
The Gibson Centre also needs your support to keep it going too. Some of our members will be selling $100 tickets for their annual fundraiser. Please buy one or get together with a few others and share one.
There will be two early-bird draws for $500 and the weekly draws will start at the New Year's Eve Gala.
Bid euchre and bridge will continue throughout the summer months but regular euchre ends on June 27
Tai chi, shuffleboard, crafts and ballroom dancing are over now until the fall.
Bid euchre results for Thurs., June 4 were winners Ralph Layman and Evelyn Dunbar and for Mon., June 8 winners were Leo Joyce and Marjory Goymour. Regular euchre winners for Sat., June 6 were Wray and Lorna McCracken. Bridge results for Fri., June 5 were winners Ruth Dermott, Shirley Fulcher and Bernice Murphy.
The next Rama bus goes on Tues., June 23 so give Joy a call at 705-435-2125.
Our hall is available for rentals all year round so give Marilyn a call at 705-434-9612 or Georgina at 905-729-0764 if you need a place to hold a birthday, anniversary, wedding or any other special occasion. There is a kitchen that can also be rented for these occasions.
Well summer will be over before we know it. That's if it ever comes! Think heat!
