The squad went to Schomberg on Thursday and left with a 9-3 win over the Cougars, the returned to home ice for a Friday game against the Stayner Siskins and shut-out the visitors 9-0. Sunday's game against Midland resulted in the Flyers taking a 9-1 bruising.
The game against Schomberg turned out to be the toughest match of the week for the Hornets, at least for the first period when the Cougars came on strong and played well going ahead by a goal at the end of the frame.
When the teams returned for the second period, however, the Hornets turned it up a notch scoring five in a row to pretty much end the game by the end of the frame.
The return to the New Tecumseth Recreation Complex on Friday turned into a shooting match with the Hornets peppering Siskins’ goalie Grant McCaffrey for the duration. To his credit, McCaffrey played a hot game but was overwhelmed by the Hornets’ offence.
Hornets winger Chad Camirand picked up a hat trick against the Stayner squad and Chris Brown scored twice within the space of nine seconds in the second period.
The Sunday-night game against Midland was predictable from the opening face off. The beleaguered Flyers have only won once this season and have faced an uphill battle after landing in the basement last year.
The Hornets scored three in each period after sending out their third and fourth lines for much of the second and third frames.
The Midland goal came when Travis Mills found himself on a breakaway after picking up a bounce and making the deke to beat net minder Troy Dowswell on the glove side.
Part of the Hornets’ strategy this year has been to keep goals against at two - something they managed to do for 13 games so far.
"We play well defensively. The coach always emphasizes that we have to play well in our end before we go down to the other end and score.” said Hornets’ left winger Chad Camirand. "If it's on my side, I know to get to the boards and chip it out to let the defencemen get it out for my centre man to take it up. If it's on the other side I'm in front in the slot taking care of their winger man."
Camirand plays on the powerhouse line with Jason Campeau on the right and Kurtis Brossard at centre.
Camirand and Campeau have been feeding off each other all season and are tied in the top spot with 37 points in league standings. Brossard is close behind in third place with 31 points and is leading the league in assists with 23 to his credit.
"We play well together and we have a lot of experience," Camirand said of his linemates. "We talk a lot. We cycle the puck down low and we're always looking for each other. As soon as someone gets the puck in the corner we known the other one is in the slot. All three of us work hard. If we don't work as hard as we know we can it's like we've let the other guys down."
The Hornets have another three-game week coming up.
On Thurs., Nov. 20, the team travels to Stayner to face the Siskins in an 8:30 p.m. start, then returns to Alliston for two games on the weekend. The Schomberg Cougars will be in town on Fri., Nov. 21 at the New Tecumseth Recreation Complex for a 7:30 p.m. start. On Sun., Nov. 23, the Hornets face the Fergus Devils.
