The Junior C Alliston Hornets took full advantage of the weekend winning two back-to-back road games that give the squad a four-game hot streak after suffering their only loss so far this season to the Penetang Kings Oct., 26.
The squad delivered an 8-0 win over the Fergus Devils Friday in a game that saw the Hornets kill 37 minutes in minor penalties while scoring three on the powerplay.
Alliston netminder Brenton MacKinnon earned the shutout in this one. Troy Dowswell was between the posts for Alliston the following night in Erin when the Hornets won their second of the weekend 5-1 over the third-place Shamrocks.
Jeff McCarty opened the scoring 6:57 into the first period followed up by a pair in the second frame by Hornets’ centre Ryan Algar.
After the weekend, the Hornets maintain first place in league standings with 28 points after 15 games followed by the Penetang Kings with 23 points and 17 games.
The Georgian Bay Mid Ontario Hockey League is starting to tell a story a third of the way into the season.
The Erin Shamrocks are in third place with a 10-7 record after a 4-2 win over Penetang on Friday.
The Schomberg Cougars have moved into fourth place with a split seven game record and two overtime losses. This is a huge turnaround for the Cougars. The Schomberg club had a dismal season last year and brought on 14 new players for 2008/2009.
The Fergus Devils are in fifth spot with 14 points just ahead of the Stayner Siskins who have won only six games this season and have 13 points.
The Midland Flyers are in the basement with their only win coming on Nov., 7 when they took a 3-2 overtime victory off the Siskins.
Four Hornets players are currently in the top five of points earners in the GBMOHL. Winger Chad Camirand is the league's top scorer with 16 goals and 15 assists. Jason Campeau is in the second spot with 15 goals an 16 assists. Centre Kurtis Brossard is in third place with 27 points and also leads the league in assists with 20 to his credit. Ryan Algar has 21 points with 10 goals and 13 assists.
The Hornets have a full slate this weekend beginning with a road game in Schomberg against the Cougars on Thurs., Nov. 13. The game is scheduled for 8:15 p.m. Two home games at the New Tecumseth Recreation Complex follow with the Hornets taking on the Stayner Siksins on Fri., Nov. 14 with a 7:30 p.m. start.
The Midland Flyers will be in Alliston for Sunday's game. The puck drop is scheduled for 6:30 p.m.
The Hornets will be hosting the top 16-year-old and 17-year-old players from the Georgian Bay Mid Ontario League, Central Junior C League, and Western Jr. C League next Tuesday night (Nov. 18) at the New Tec Rec Complex.
The Junior C Under 17 game is held to showcase the talent of the younger players in the three leagues for scouts. Reportedly several scouts will be in attendance. Game time is 7:30 p.m.
