On the road, the squad delivered a 5-2 win over the second place Penetang Kings on Friday. The return to Alliston on Sunday gave the team a 5-0 shutout over the Erin Shamrocks.
"They took our undefeated record from us so we all thought we'd better go in and try a little harder," said Alliston centre Kyle McDowell of Friday's game against Penetang.
The Kings handed the Hornets their only loss of the season the previous week on Alliston's home ice.
"Everyone was going hard. Our third and fourth line, we could put them out there and just cycle the puck around. I think we just came to that first Penetang game a little unprepared. We had the whole week off (prior to the first game) and in the second game we got refocused."
The Hornets out shot the Kings 44-22.
Sunday's game against Erin opened with a pair of goals early in the first period when Luke Vanderhulst and Chris Brown got the markers to give the Hornets the lead going into the second frame.
Two more Alliston goals followed in the second period from centre Randy Cox and defenseman Alex McTeer.
Chad Camirand scored in the third period when he took the feed from Jason Campeau and beat Erin goalie Lucas Reid on the stick side.
Camirand and Campeau are tied at 27 points and lead the league in the point standings.
Alliston netminder Troy Dowswell earned the shutout.
Sunday was all about the game with few penalties and a lot of end-to-end hockey, especially in the second period when few stoppages saw lines change several times before a whistle halted play.
The Hornets had only 10 minutes in minors for the entire game compared to 12 minutes on the Shamrocks' side.
The Alliston squad kept the pressure on and the puck in the Erin end for most of the third period.
"We want to be an aggressive team," said Hornets head coach Darrin Shannon. "We want to try forcing the teams to make good plays. We've got good speed and we've got guys that are strong on the puck, so that's definitely our strategy. Keep it deep and try to get on top of them."
The squad has worked as hard on stopping goals as they have on scoring them - a technique that has frustrated the opposition all year.
"I think we've done a pretty good job of it. It's not perfect but that's the catch when you try to be real aggressive. Having a third guy high is the key to that. There's break downs but all in all I think our guys have done a pretty good job with it. They've been pretty diligent and pretty smart. Every team that's aggressive needs to improve the third guy high, but that's the hard thing because everybody starts to get sucked in because you think you have a chance for a goal and when there's a turn over you might get three guys caught down low. That's something we're working on and something we're going to continue to work on all year," Shannon said.
After the weekend, the Hornets are in first place in the Georgian Bay Mid Ontario Hockey League with 24 points.
There won't be a Hornets home game this coming weekend.
The squad travels to Fergus on Fri., Nov. 7, for an 8:30 p.m. game against the Devils and returns to home ice at the New Tecumseth Recreation Complex on Fri., Nov. 14 to face the Stayner Siskins for a 7:30 p.m. start.
They play a second weekend game on Sun., Nov. 16, against the Midland Flyers. The puck drop is scheduled for 6:30 p.m.
